After system update I cannot use iced anymore #829

After a recent system update under PopOS 20.10, iced refuses to link with anything anymore. Everything fails with a linker error:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lfontconfig
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lfreetype
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lfreetype
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

Any idea?

After a cargo clean it's even worse, right after wgpu I get that crap:

I guess this computer can no longer use iced, I will try my Linux laptop.

EDIT2: Same issue with Linux laptop. Now every of my linux systems are unable to build with iced.

Could you check if you have libfreetype6-dev installed? (Or just run sudo apt install libfreetype6-dev)

Why is it now needed to installer another of these -dev packages? Why can't you make something that just works like on windows?

Welcome on Linux lol. Btw this dependency isn't new, looks like your system upgrade just removed it again.

Sorry but when I write my own software on linux, somehow it just works. Just use something like conan or provide your own pre-built bins like I do and guess what it works great.

WTF have you done to the project it's completely broken now. After installing this -dev package it built but it now does infinite loop:

Even yesterday it was still working and if I try the build of yesterday it still works and there's no infinite loop/hang/crash and there's also not this 100 of crappy logs... Really what have you done to break iced so badly?

Fixed by sudo apt install libfontconfig1-dev

Again sorry for the wording I just hate when things breaks from day to day. If you wish I can edit the post and get rid of the harsh wording.

Why was this added to milestone 0.4? Are there plans to implement an iced that is fontconfig independent and would directly access /usr/share/fonts?

@Yuri6037 No the point is not to edit your comments after the fact. There is no reason to disrespectful in the first place. I understand getting mad at code, but do not project that anger at others. Please be nice when you create your comment.
