youtube-dl supports far more APIs for media URLs and supports them far better than VLC on top of that since it is updated far more often.

This issue includes following issues:

YouTube URLs sometimes fail with HTTP error 403 due to VLC's outdated YouTube processing code.
[x] Support for SoundCloud
[x] Support for DailyMotion

This issue has been fixed in commit 73aeca588ab1f75cea25fed1954cf6e87533c605.
