Aspect Description
Opportunities Huge potential for connecting up data across disciplines. Improved user experiences in finding linked/connected data (e.g. biological and oceanographic data from the same survey without separate searches)
Action required Potential training opportunities. Look to EU/NWS/RDA initiatives on linked data.
Ownership No specific owner

Likelihood: 2. There is still limited uptake and use of semantic data and linked data within ICES. The movement towards using common reference lists within ICES databases is the most visible progress. Whilst some domains have been using common vocabularies for many years, others are still in the early stages.

Impact: 2. The ability to work semantically across all ICES data and with the wider world of linked data could be very powerful. However many users of ICES data may spend the majority of their time within a particular domain so might not gain any immediate benefits from this.
