Ethical use of AI/ML tools in science #554

AI and ML tools are already in extensive use within Marine Science (see WGML reports). The specific challenge around ethics relate to a number of issues:

  1. Ensuring appropriate use of source data without violation of privacy or license agreements
  2. Making clear when results, text, or graphics are generated by generative AI or similar tools - in particular within ICES reports
  3. Determining if ICES published data and reports can and should feed into generative AI (under current license it can and does)

A 'core' group met for the first time 5th Feb with representation from SCICOM, ACOM, WGML, DSTSG, DIG and ICES DC

A short document was made based on discussion which will be tabled as a briefing for SCICOM and ACOM in the Spring. The aim of this is to "Include implications of AI in the existing guidelines and policies that ICES operate within"
