Size of rings - new dot type for absorbed vertebrae #218

Open JaneGodiksen opened 3 years ago

JaneGodiksen commented 3 years ago

The readers must be able to know the measurements. Due to the resorption in the structure, some rings can be masked. To avoid the problem of these lost rings, if the reader knows the measurement, he can be able to know how much annulus have been lost. Consequently, reader can have an option to assign the “real” age to the first ring that is read/marked (comment from Pedro Lino following a swordfish calibration exercise)

Jane: Am I correct that the first part is possible, one just need to have scaled the image? I am not sure what he means with the last part. But if the first problem is solved, then the last might also be?

JCoadDavies commented 3 years ago

I also think this is possible but yes the coordinator needs to have the correct scale shown for the image for the readers to see. This is written in the manual but the point needs to be stressed. We could make it a point for the next newsletter with #217

Needs clarification from Pedro.

JaneGodiksen commented 3 years ago

I'll add a first milestone to March meeting. Then we can change when we have a clarification.

JCoadDavies commented 3 years ago

I have written to Pedro for clarification

The issue is that the first years often are absorbed, and therefore a reader is dependent on being able to measure the growth and compare this with younger fish to ensure correct aging. They will measure the inner part of the vertebrae and from the distance to the first visible ring they will know that this represents f.ex. three years. It is not possible to start counting at three at the moment. As the software is now, it is only possible to add three dots in the center of the image to represent the three absorbed years, and then the coordinator will have to sort out what is useful measurements and what is "absorbed measurements". Is there any way we can make vertebra-counting-absorbed dots? So the vertebrae readers will use these for aging in the non-readable area? Like the freshwater dots? We could maybe rename these to be "freshwater/absorbed vertebrae"

I think adding another type of dots can be a good solution. I would not use or change an existing type for this, adding a new type will be more clear for the agereaders.

Should these dots be placed on a reading line or not?

JCoadDavies commented 2 years ago

NEED TO DISCUSS THIS at Q1 2022 meeting

JCoadDavies commented 2 years ago

We use the freshwater dot and call "Freshwater/Absorbed". This will come with the new release
