Dave will return to Lithuania to ask for more information, especially regarding how the countries will collect/find the information on depth.
There are two stocks of redfish in this case - shallow and deep. Currently in LT information from sampled hauls is used to estimate when a vessel was fishing for each stock - this depth information is not available in the logbooks. In the example given there is only 1 vessel fishing and they target the different stocks on different trips so it is relatively easy to separate the activity. A categorical depth field could be defined for CE/CL. The depths of interest for redfish are above and below 500m - different stocks might have different depth thresholds though. We discussed whether the "nationalFishingActivity" fields in CE/CL could be used to differentiate targeting the two stocks but this would required all the relevant countries to define similar national codes. The conclusion at this point was that we should wait for the WGs who require this depth information to define their needs before proposing a solution in the future.
Discussed 11/01/2022 by RDBES CE CL subgroup A suggestion is to use the Deep Sea Regulation field, if the fishery is under that regulation.
Discussed again 8/3/2022 by RDBES CE CL subgroup. The DEEP field as defined in the FDI data call, refer to catches of more than 100 kg of species specified in the deep sea regulation list of stocks and not to the depth.
It was discussed but no conclusion was made. Potentially a new fields e.g. 'Stock split indicator' instead of the specific 'Depth' could be an option.
"Information on depth in CE and CL tables. There is no field indicating depth in the current CE and CL tables. Depth is essential, at least for redfish stocks. Suggestion: Incorporate “Depth” into tables CE and CL as OPTIONAL (because usually there are no information on depth in logbooks). To state in the guidelines that for some stocks like redfish information on depth should be mandatory."
