In discussions with teachers and academics, we've found that Facebook is actually blocked in most school systems. Will this be an issue with students logging in while at school? If so, what alternatives might there be?

Implementing a different login is a non-trivial matter. Hopefully there is a way for schools to get around the Facebook restriction. If not, almost all of the functionality on the site is available without an account.
