They seem like vestiges of the older page limits, and make keeping everything updated more difficult.
Likewise, I'd recommend removing abbrv-doi.bst. If we want everyone to have clickable hyperlinks for DOIs, we should not provide other options. The downside I see is that this would require folks to use hyperref which can be slightly more challenging than w/o.
