The reader is expected to know that "roles" input and output "conceptual messages" that are conveyed by some form of protocol payload or message. The term "conceptual message" isn't intuitive IMO. There is a definition in the Intro that seems adequate but if the reader didn't internalize this then it may require rereading (which I'm OK with).
Conceptual Message was a compromise that nobody really loved but also nobody could find a better name for. Maybe we can look at this now with fresh pairs of eyes.
"Conceptual Messages" wasn't a great term, but we went with it.
