refactor: Remove dead code

Remove code that seems to be obsolete

I think this is all on the right path.

Note, however, that a requirement to put things (uploads) into s3-compatible bucket storage is likely to come back very soon (along with a need to transfer what we currently have on disk into that storage). Not asking for anything now - just pointing out not to make that harder later.
