From IETF101:

EAI might make sizes different depending on downcoding.
server might find it easier to sum size including annotations, metadata, etc.

suggestion: change wording to allow server to send the sum of messages sizes OR a larger number. Use case is clients knowing which mailboxes are "big", so obviously don't just always send $BIGNUM for all folders!
