Is there a reason to rewrite links on the fly rather than just fixing them in the database once and for all?
Leaving them untouched in the database is easier, if at some point the site goes back up, or gets a more permanent home.
Links in IFDB that lead to Baf's Guide are automatically rewritten to use the Internet Archive.
I think the same should be done for playthisthing.com editorial reviews. That site is still up, but all the permalinks are broken and lead to the main page.
For example, Lost Pig was originally at http://playthisthing.com/lost-pig-and-place-under-ground And is accessible now at https://web.archive.org/web/20130210215835/http://playthisthing.com/lost-pig-and-place-under-ground
