Work in progress to address #7 and #6

@lauracabayol , @jchavesmontero - This is now ready for PR. I checked that it doesn't break cup1d, all notebooks run without a problem.

Let's first review / approve / merge the other PR (#5) before doing the same with this one though, in case there is a conflict (I doubt it).
