Portrayal Catalogue Considerations #49

Closed hasel001 closed 3 months ago

Note: Although an Issue might not be a perfect vehicle for dealing with this topic, I judge it to be the most effective among the choices, so I am creating this Issue.

Our recent Portrayal Catalogue (PC) discussion (whose minutes can be found here) raised several questions. If anyone else has considerations to provide, please respond to this issue with them. Thank you!

This morning, @Andy-Talbot sent me the following message with comments from @TomRichardson6 (S-101 PT Chair):

Hi @hasel001,

I had a chat recently with @TomRichardson6 at UKHO who is chair of the S-101 project team and he had the following thoughts on some of the questions we had at the last catch up on portrayal. I thought they were worth passing on:

If S-102 is produced quicker than S-101 which will take precedence in portrayal?

There is currently no logic that would override and give one priority, if an S-102 dataset is installed and the user displays it, it will display. Clearly it will be important for producers to consider and manage the coherence between the two products.

Will all displays be limited to same portrayal? What about PPUs?

The Portrayal Catalogue will define display in ECDIS systems type approved against the ECDIS Test Standard set by IEC only. PPUs ECS and other systems are free to innovate and do better as they do now.

S-102 includes sun illumination but this is not covered in S-100.

Yes for edition 3.0.0 this will just have to be captured as a known limitation of the Portrayal Catalogue and there will need to be a proposal to S-100 WG to add this in.

Regards,

@Andy-Talbot

Chair has action to move this issue to an appropriate forum (either a Discussion or a Wiki entry) and to subsequently close this issue (per PT16 decision)
