bathymetricUncertaintyType - name and definition #78

bathymetricUncertaintyType is one of the elements in the feature attribute table (clause 10 Tables 7 and 8). The current definition in the text is:

An estimate of the magnitude of the difference between true and estimated bathymetric depth, after all appropriate corrections are made.

This definition is inaccurate and does not match the name (which, note, has ...type suffixed), because it is an enumeration attribute and takes values specifying types, not numeric estimates of uncertainty. I had therefore proposed it to the GI registry with a modification:

The measure used to estimate the magnitude of the difference between true and estimated bathymetric depth, after all appropriate corrections are made.

Feedback from the Domain Control Body:

I'm not sure what is being estimated. Is it the absolute difference between the true bathymetric depth and the estimated bathymetric depth in whatever unit of measurement is used for the depth (meters, fathoms, feet, etc.). Or is this absolute difference then compared to some sort of unitless magnitude scale?

Agree name and definition are vague, perhaps use Bathymetric Estimation Uncertainty OR if it is a 'Type' of bathymetric uncertainty then Type of Bathymetric Estimation Uncertainty, to make it clear it is a choice of options. Concerned this could be confused with Quality of Bathymetric Data which has a reference in S-101 DCEG (1.1.0) 3.7.1 of Quality, reliability and uncertainty of bathymetric data. All 'Uncertainty' items in S-101 have a specific type of uncertainty e.g. horizontal position uncertainty, vertical uncertainty. Recommend that DQWG should be involved to ensure consistency across S-101/S-102.

I propose to amend the name to "Type of Bathymetric Estimation Uncertainty" and retain the definition as proposed to the registry (since there don't appear to be any questions about that). The S-102 PT may also want to consider whether DQWG should be involved.

Amendments to Clause 10 will be needed when the name and definition are finalized.

Or perhaps rename it as "Type of Bathymetric Estimation Uncertainty" and replace measure with method in the definition.

This attribute has been approved in the GI Registry.
