Hate to disappoint everyone. I'm no legal experts and I could be wrong. But according to my preliminary research on GPL license, the only thing Zhang Yaoxue did wrong is that he did not acknowledge copyright owner's rights.

By acknowledging copyright owner's rights, he would then have to honor GPL license. And GPL license enables everybody to do what he does: making money and fame (as long as you include the copyright owners). If he doesn't distribute the software publicly, you cannot even demand him to show the source code to you.

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhoHasThePower http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#DoesTheGPLAllowMoney http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#DoesTheGPLAllowRequireFee http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#CanIDemandACopy

The best outcome one can expect is that the organization given out this award take originality of research work seriously and retract it. Well, most of you are Chinese. You know how it works.

Again, I could be wrong. And I hope so.

neoatlantis commented 9 years ago

I would like to emphasis, that awarded is not your(@iiordanov ) software, but his so-called invention. He didn't mention anything about you or this, and have gave it a completely new name, something like ''transparent computing'' and used it to cheat for the prize. It's not something acknowledgable for your work, no, it's just cheating for fame.

And worse it is, what being cheated is the nearly highest honor that can be given by the country that have been left blank for years in order for maintaining the quality!

@akfish

Hit my point.

I think is too soon to put 'theft' mark on the 'professor' as we don't actually see the code / product they made. All the information we got currectly is just come from that very video. But the possibility of that guy just using codes from this project to do some minor thing, like RDP, VNC connect etc is not excludable.

Don't get my wrong, now we all know how ridiculous that prizes and that 'professor''s project is, but we don't acutally have the reliable evidence for any judgmental verdict.

But since the project bases on other (contagious) GPL projects, it's easy to ASK the code from the 'professor' guy.

Though ... I pretty like to see the professor got humiliated if he really stealing anything

Liu B!

neoatlantis commented 9 years ago

And to those who are hoping to complain about this by emailing the professor, the government, etc: You are nearly fighting against dictatorship. Lies are everywhere. Our articles in Chinese or in Chinese websites have been and are being deleted.

yiichou commented 9 years ago

@raincious Yeah! I agree with U. The professor may be innocent. Because all of these has been done by his postgraduate(student)

He just take the prizes and benefit. There is C-H-I-N-A, where amazing happens

akfish commented 9 years ago

@raincious Yep. In fact if this so-called “break-through” turns out to be like most Chinese government-funded project, we would never see it being published. Then we will never have real evidence. The only thing can be done about it now is that the copyright holders demand explanations from this professor and request the award committee to launch an investigation. And there is little hope in that route either. They can just simply ignore any messages. Anyway, if the author decides not to pursuit this case, we'll have to respect his decision.

Chrisplus commented 9 years ago

@IvanChou no...... professor should take all of responsibilities on his projects, for sure.

and agree with @raincious it is too early to make some judgments on cheating or not. BUT this project must be a potential evidence to show how ridiculous 'trans computing' is.
