Hi Felix!
I just found out that the "View Contact" function is broken on the contacts
that aren't showing a picture. When you press "View Contact" on a conversation
whose contact should be showing a picture but isn't, you're presented a list of
applications with which to "open" the contact - without the Android Contacts
application being listed.
Maybe there's a correlation?

I have a quite similar issue: For me all but one contact images are broken,
too. When I try to view the contact of a thread with broken image there's
always shown the contact that was added to my contact database at last. This
contact doesn't have a picture, so I think the broken mapping causes the
missing pictures, too. When I delete that contact the contact that was added
before is shown after pressing "view contact" in SMSdroid. It's interesting,
that the names, displayed in SMSdroid, are correct. All my contacts are Google
contacts.
I think the problem occurred first after I tried to add information to an
existing contact using the XING app. But I don't think that this corrupted my
contact database since the stock SMS app works fine.
I'm using SMSdroid 0.1.5 on Desire's (rooted) stock ROM (Android 2.1).
Clearing SMSdroid's cache doesn't make any difference.
Update: I can fix a single contact by deleting and re-adding it. But don't
really want to do that with every contact I have...

I have no pictures as well. However, some contacts have pictures and those are
the contacts, with pictures that are NOT from facebook. All facebook pictures
are not displayed. Might help you finding the issue...

Interesting. The problem is present without any Facebook contacts whatsoever
too, though.

2.3.1 HTC Desire
Also, an image of a contact is not shown (in the stock app it is). It was added
manually (not via facebook integration), but so was another which works.
...
After joining a number with a contact, its image disappeared, as well as a
conversation with the original contact, which is another isssue...

please install this debug apk.
if some contact is missing again, please send me your logs.
this is somehow related to my internal caching.
i really do not want to turn it off, but i do not know how to handle it
properbly.

I have the same problem using my motorola defy. And from the beginning of use
it. No contact pictures. When I choose 'show contact's I also get that list. I
saved my contacts in the Google adressbook. Not in the phones one. And I didn't
sync to google anytime. Maybe that helpes. Otherwise, how am I able to help?
