Desktop Firefox strips apk/apkm file extensions #226

Closed Peet-R closed 2 years ago

When i download an apk file, it has a ".com" extension, and my Windows thinks it's a MS-DOS application. I need to remane them in Total Commander, to be able to install them on my phone. Most of the time, I'm downloading Samsung apps, so i don't know if this problem is also persist by other uploaded apk files. Screenshot_1

This is probably a browser issue. Last time it was reported, I wasn't able to reproduce. What browser are you using? You should probably report this as a bug to them.

I'm using Firefox latest version. But i will try other browsers too, maybe some of my FF extensions causing the problem.

So Firefox desktop stable? What version?

If you narrow down the cause, please let us know.

i'm using Firefox 102.0 Stable. But i just tried Edge browser, and it works flawless, so the problem is on my side somewhere in firefox. I need to check my extensions, and look on FF forum, maybe there is something about this. I apologize for the inconvenience, and thank You for the quick reply.

The first question is does it happen without any extensions? If it does, I wonder if it could be some field trial, though I'd be puzzled by its purpose.

Maybe it was worth it to give it a try with a clean, portable firefox.

Did you give it a try? If so, what did you find?

I just tested the latest Firefox stable (102.2.0) and for me it's downloading with the correct file extensions.

OK, this is only happening to desktop Firefox, not mobile. I confirmed it myself. We will likely file a bug.

From what I can tell in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1773907, this is a known bug in Firefox 102, and a solution was merged today https://hg.mozilla.org/integration/autoland/rev/ed5f1dbedf55 but will only land in 104.

Update: Looks like it was approved for 103 as well.

From the ticket:

Comment # 6 on Bug 1779135 from :Gijs (he/him) at 2022-07-13 03:33:13 PDT I reproduced on 103 early betas and it's fixed on 103 beta 8 so I think this is a straight dupe of bug 1773907. The issue was caused by the querystring in the download location (shown in the redirect headers in comment #3).

This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 1773907

I will close.
