I appreciate the sentiment, but maybe wait on that until I'm back to actively developing? RL business has kept me from making any recent changes.
Got it. @karxi be ready to take the torch from @illuminatedwax though
If he's alright with the idea, I'd love to. It's a piece of the Homestuck fandom that I'd love to take care of.
I'm a pretty busy person (hence lack of dev) but Pesterchum has always been intended to be an open source project that others could branch off of or add to. (In fact, the protocol is such that anyone could make their own client from scratch!) The only thing I own is the code, which is GPLv3'd, so as long as you follow the GPL you can do whatever you want; and the servers, which I'm happy to continue maintaining.
That said, I've regretted code that's been submitted in the past, as it created the invite exploit. It sounds like you guys in the community trust karxi as a coder. I will update to karxi's branch once I look at the code changes (please tell me you replaced JSON files with SQLite correctly, as that fixes most of the bugs) and approve them.

I haven't, no. I'm not familiar with SQL; I'd been more focused on fixing what I knew how to fix. When I left off I was seeing about changing the way options were handled, but what I was doing was much too complicated for what it was worth.
Hahh, of course I'm getting self-conscious about this now... If you have questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to me!
@illuminatedwax this torch-passing should have been done ages ago, that way people would still support it... nowadays https://github.com/vector-im/riot-web or the new fork (https://github.com/thegridprotocol/thegrid) is a good replacement for IRC and I would hope that you or @karxi could re-skin for an easier way out.
Unfortunately, it's not that simple; Pesterchum is based off of IRC, so moving it would mean fragmenting the community, which is already far smaller than it used to be. I'm not sure how one would distribute that news (or even regular updates - I'd been meaning to adjust that myself), and I'm not sure what would happen if one were to try.
@karxi destroy-build-destroy? Besides Riot will someday replace Discord so rejoice on your part
This is the first I've heard of it - maybe I'll investigate later. It seems awfully early for Discord to be replaced, though; has it really been around for long enough for that much frustration to build up?
I'm suddenly awfully curious as to who you are, in any case.
Donald, anyone was free to come along and make improvements and karxi has, and to be frank you sound pretty entitled.
Secondly, IRC is not the issue behind any of Pesterchum's biggest bugs. There are features that could appear if you were to move to a different backend (voice chat, etc), but I don't know that it would ever be worth splitting the community over.

@karxi just a man who was a bit poor while reading Homestuck, who can't join the kickstarter. I guess all good things come to an end... and I hope that an exodus may (or may not) help.
@illuminatedwax Matrix does support IRC bridges, so you might find that interesting. They also have Jitsi as default VoIP and others are working on SIP/Mumble support, so some of the features can be transitioned without much friction.
I will note that, as someone managing a community on Pesterchum, I've noticed a lot of people voicing concerns about its longevity. Not that Pesterchum as a service will die, per se, but rather, that the communities it plays host to will wither away due to a lack of new life. Something like this could help, in theory.
That might be a bit beyond the scope of this discussion, though?...
Please, @illuminatedwax since you have retired, please redirect your repo to others who are developing it like https://github.com/karxi/pesterchum (who is doing it consistently)
