Is there a house style for representing money? If not, can we have one for consistency that will make the regular expressions for matching easier? The following principles were used in Paul and Brendan's volume:

Examples:

½ mark
1 mark
1½ marks
£28.6s.8d.
£6.9s.
66s.1½d.
17s.

Mike, personally I would now slightly change these to remove the dot after the £ amount, so:

½ mark 1 mark 1½ marks £28 6s. 8d. £6 9s. 66s. 0½d. etc

But am willing to follow Peter's CIRCLE principles too.

I think it’s dots or no dots! But I could be persuaded to expand marks!
