Imho bios and authors' links to their pages is perhaps more essential to github's communality. Though definitely I love seeing people's photos, the network effect of seeing their urls and #followers I think is more important. Thoughts? What is the value you personally get from photos and/or from github in this regard? //AnneTheAgile
Seeing followers and links out to ppl's profiles, more important than a profile pic for sure. But it's a non-zero-sum thing. Having pics pop up in various places (big one in your profile, small ones that go in your non-anonymous comments, like 'contributor' pics in github) - I think they add a whole lot in the professional-site / community-atmosphere department.
Possibly one reason why github is so much more successful than any of the other VCS sites? The design is really hurting for content and profile pics would be a great way to make site participation more interesting.
