I would also love an update to add AC3 and DTS passthrough. It's really
frustating, as most of my media uses those codecs.

I bought my chromecast to stream mkv videos over my network. But most of them
have AC3 or DTS audio too...
I think about returning my chromecast... Please google! Add AC3/DTS support.

Please add support for AC3 and DTS. Device has severely limited usability with
current set of codecs.

It's just ridiculous that I have to resort to Dolby Pro Logic on my old but
still very fine Proceed AVP. A €35 device bringing down my 15000 DM preamp? A
€35 all-digital device needs to use *analog* surround?!?
This is a joke. A particularly bad one.

Please add support for AC3 and DTS. I just bought one for myself, and The Old
Man for Father's Day. The Old man needs his 5.1, The Old Man doesn't convert.

Same reaction. This is so obviously needed that I assumed the device could do
it. I have two of these and they're almost worthless to me. What a sham(e).

Yeah, I bought this device a couple of days ago because I thought I'd be able
to watch all of my videos... Looks like I'll be returning this real soon and
going back to an HDMI cord that lays around on the ground.
I think I'll pass buying the next "latest and greatest" product if it turns out
that you guys leave (basic) features off to push more expensive products...

Put me in for requesting AC3 and DTS support. This device is practically

Bubbleupnp has a server that can be installed on any device in the lan and
transcodes the audio for everything played using the bubbleupnp app as a
workaround.
still this is a must have! even if I have to buy the license like on the

Android TV (ADT-1) doesn't have passthrough neither, in it's current build
(LPV79). If Google is serious about seeing Android TV succeed they need to
support passthrough. Those of us with big screen tv's and surround sound setups
don't want anything less.

As this issue is marked as "WontFix", I decided to bulk-convert all my videos
via shell script. I've shared it on GitHub, if anyone interested (Linux/Mac

There are also some programs with GUI, but I haven't really tried any.

Agree with the above posters. This is a serious limitation that I wasn't aware
of before buying the Chromecast. Given I'd bought this partly to enable easy
playback of videos from our phones or tablets to a TV while on holiday (to give
the kids something ok to watch), and most of my own encodes are with AC3
soundtracks, this really does stuff things up. Don't believe I should need to
re-encode my videos given this surely isn't a significant change for Google
(but a huge issue for many users).
