Match puzzle pieces to their location in the scanned complete box image, using OpenCV, handling rotation, etc.
Hardware could scan pieces on a belt, tossing flipped pieces back into the hopper until all the pieces are scanned. Not sure how to place pieces delicately enough not to mess everything up.
