It's the count of sequences within the preclone (V, J, junction length) grouping - which is the number of rows/records in the tab file. It doesn't take into account any annotations (eg DUPCOUNT or CONSCOUNT), so that it's agnostic to the experimental protocol. We should probably change it to SEQUENCES though, as READS is a bit misleading.
