trying to upload observations from phone to website: times out #347

So I recently deleted the beta iphone app because it expired and re installed inaturalist from the app store. 2.6.22 build 403. I now can't upload observations from the iphone app to the website - it sits there and makes no progress then times out. Not a big deal - only 2 observations - but should figure it out.

Same version and build of the app on an iPhone 6+. Uploads had been bad over the past couple of weeks--sometimes needed two or three tries before uploading successfully--but now I rarely succeed with an upload even by the sixth try for an observation.

I'm teaching a class which includes iNaturalist this afternoon and the app still doesn't work. :(

I might be able to use an android phone but please look at this soon !

Let's focus on the iOS timeout issue here. Do you have a screenshot of the exact error message you're seeing? Does this happen for all observations or just some and is there any pattern?

naturalistcharlie commented 7 years ago

It didn't work for the last few days but it worked now on both platforms. Alex said he was looking at it so maybe he found the issue. Thanks! On Mon, Mar 20, 2017 at 2:25 PM Ken-ichi notifications@github.com wrote:

Nothing has really changed on our end. I think this is one or a combination of

  1. Bad internet connection on your end
  2. Weird project-related issue
  3. Some crashes we've been experiencing due to our search engine machines becoming serious memory crunched.

Looking at our failed upload data from the past few days, it seems most of them line up with our search engine crashes, i.e. times the site went down. This is something we're actively working on, both trying to reduce our memory footprint and expanding to new hardware to accommodate the increased load. However, so far I have no evidence this is due to a bug in the iOS app, so I'm going to close this issue.

I asked some follow-up questions in the Google Group that would still help us out if you wouldn't mind answering. In general, I think the Google Group is a better place to start these conversations. I'd like to keep github issues to well-defined, reproducible issues a developer can work on. Plus, the Google Group helps us get a better sense of how broad the impact is since more people are likely to chime in.

sorry, i thought we were supposed to put bug reports here but that makes sense! So far the problem is gone again but i will keep monitoring
