See https://github.com/inaturalist/iNaturalistAndroid/issues/1244 and https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/243294058#comment9 On my device I use a workaround: Instead of picking images directly I click the three vertical dots menu in the top toolbar of the picker and picking images from that interface. It is a few extra steps for each image, it is annoying, but I agree this workaround will be barely known to the majority of users and it should be somehow fixed asap (e.g. via 3rd party picker).
This did work, it also seems to be fixed again from the photo picker. Not sure what happened.
We are currently trying to force the app to use the old-style picker while we can, but Google definitely seems to be moving toward removing access to EXIF data for privacy reasons, so who knows how long we'll be able to do that. If they remove access completely at a low level, it's possible even third party picker libraries won't help. If that bothers you, please let Google know by leaving a comment at https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/243294058.
Android users no longer have the geolocation pulled from photos despite having proper permissions and meta data being there.
This broke for me on August 5th after the last update. Google Play store and Facebook have similar complaints.
