issues unpacking .pax fiels

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Attempted to extract a .pax file from within the mac ports installer
package.
2. Extracting the contents with the unarchiver only extracted a partial
amount of the contents of this compressed file.
3. Disabling the unarchiver allowed the full extraction of the contents of
this .pax file

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
There are several folders/files missing when attempting to extract from a
.pax file

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.3 and 1.6 on 10.4.9

Please provide any additional information below.
