yeah having some more tools for mappers should definitly be a goal. Maybe we can provide an API to script that stuff.
Raw heightmaps could already work with the prefab-system, but giving the opportunity to load heightmap-textures sounds pretty reasonable.
However we will definitly need a good UI for that, too. So people don't get as confused with it as with the blendmap-system.
+1 would be a nice feature.

The height maps could be also stored and loaded as a JSON-Structure.

Hmm meta seems to be the wrong repository for this issue. This is a feature request not a organizational topic.
It would be nice to have the option to import raw or image heightmaps to create good looking outside environment levels or terrains with ease. I know the original Cube 2 stays pure with having all the tools inside the engine, but some level creators like myself would like to use 3rd party tools or heightmap editors.
P.S. The new ambient occlusion addition looks awesome! keep up the good work guys. :)
