Possible ideas for new decision contexts | Team Awesome Part 2: The Rise of Suraj #5

Jon Grant and Nikita Oliver were campaigning for office in Seattle this Summer and represented the Affordable Seattle campaign. Some of the demands being made by affordable Seattle included building more affordable housing units (which currently account for like less than 5% of new units I believe) and economic assistance for relocation from landlords who have effectively evicted tenants by raising prices. When I went door knocking in the Summer, people seemed to think that price speculation in the Seattle area was also a major factor.

Perhaps economic evictions/ price gouging would be an interesting way to explore homelessness in a more nuanced way.

I also know that the Affordable Seattle campaign was demanding that 25% of new privately built units be affordable, so perhaps the question of private vs public units will be important.

Perhaps the eviction of entry level workers poses problems to the city in terms of increased congestion because more people have to commute a further distance to maintain their jobs in Seattle

@leepolla I just wanted to say I really appreciate your brainstorming for/with us. It was very insightful and interesting. We are considering a pivot to something more specific, and actually Nathan suggested another policy agenda item of HALA that we may end up looking at.

Thanks again.
