Steps towards a lightweight MOD 1.4 alignment #97

Ideally OBO should soon start to look beyond its confines in terms of metadata reconciliation if the goal is, which I believe it should be, to harmonise science (meta-)data as a whole. One place to look is @jonquet's MOD 2.0. We are going into a similar direction, but it is inherently hard to try and change metadata practices bottom up, as resources are scarce and not everyone believes as much as some of us in the priority of "standardised metadata". Also there is the issue of #90 that needs to be overcome.

I will briefly mention this issue at the workshop next week, but there are no further action items here.

Also, there is this cool new visual "O'FAIRE" tool: https://github.com/ontoportal-lirmm/bioportal_web_ui/releases which is kinda cool. We should think of this when making the Dashboard results more prominent.

Hi @matentzn, all. We have been working for a few years with @biswanathdutta on MOD. Current version is MOD1.4 and we are in the process of proposing MOD2 : https://github.com/sifrproject/MOD-Ontology/

The idea of MOD was to take the suite of initiatives like OMV, DOOR or VOAF that were focused on ontologies and vocabularies. The idea was not originally to propose anew standard but to review and list the properties that can be used. MOD was described in :https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-70863-8_17 (it was 1.2 at that time). MOD1.4 has reviewed 346 metadata properties and compiled them into a model of 127 properties. But we tried has much as possible no to re-create new properties.

Since a couple of years, with initiatives like RDA VSSIG or H2020 FAIRsFAIR we are discussion MOD2 as an extension of DCAT2 that will include the formal definition of Semantic Artefacts and their catalogs. We are in the process of merging MOD1.4 list of properties into MOD2 new model : https://github.com/sifrproject/MOD-Ontology/commits/master

MOD1.4 was a requirement to implement a unified (and rich) metadata model in AgroPortal https://doi.org/10.1007/s13740-018-0091-5 We are still in the process of discussing this with OntoPortal (AgroPortal has extended the original BioPortal metadata model and this feature has not yet been pushed back to BioPortal) with @graybeal

O'FAIRe is a new recent methodology (and thanks to MOD) a tool that we have implemented to evaluate the level of FAIRness of ontologies: https://github.com/agroportal/fairness It is demonstrated on AgroPortal welcome page: http://agroportal.lirmm.fr/ or the French SIFR BioPortal (http://bioportal.lirmm.fr/)

I am very impressed of OBO effort with metadata curation / harmonization. I am totally open to collaboration on this. We have a new HEU project in which we are going to consolidate some of this work also with @agbeltran

Convergences with OMO and IAO are certainly needed.

Thank you @jonquet!
