NanoPi R5C `wan0` not detected #5

Closed joachimneu closed 1 year ago

joachimneu commented 1 year ago

The rc4 image for the R5C does not detect wan0 on my NanoPi R5C. I suppose the reason is still due to the problem underlying issue #3.

lspci finds only one Ethernet controller at 0001:01:00.0. That is also the only controller that shows up in dmesg. No output about the other controller whatsoever, not in ip a, not in dmesg, not in lspci.

Let me know what I can do to help debug!

Can you send the output of dmesg?

Here's the dmesg output for this repo's rc4: https://pastebin.com/9L9KJvfU

Here is the dmesg output for the rk3568-sd-debian-bullseye-core-5.10-arm64-20230510.img image from https://wiki.friendlyelec.com/wiki/index.php/NanoPi_R5C, where both ethX interfaces show up: https://pastebin.com/9Aq8bq8j

For what it's worth, here is the output of find -type f | grep pcie@fe2{7,8}0000/ | sort | xargs -L 1 -I '{}' sh -c "echo '{}'; hexdump '{}'" in the device tree of rk3568-sd-debian-bullseye-core-5.10-arm64-20230510.img and rc4:

Most differences between rk3568-sd-debian-bullseye-core-5.10-arm64-20230510.img and rc4 are "the same" for pcie@fe270000 and pcie@fe28000, except for:

I am wondering if this patch will address the issue you are seeing: https://github.com/Kwiboo/u-boot-rockchip/commit/abbba2051c85413aec4dd655776c63500760d5fe

I have patched the r5c device tree with it if you want to replace the one in /boot and give it a try: rk3568-nanopi-r5c.dtb https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-ntzX7ytecGuc55Jj5k7KAIiw9XPd5d6/view?usp=sharing

Thank you! Doesn't work, unfortunately. Here is the dmesg output: https://pastebin.com/rhDMwN5D What I have done: I have loaded the rc4 image onto an SD card, then mounted the card on my laptop and replaced the /boot/rk3568-nanopi-r5c.dtb file with the one you uploaded to Google drive, then booted from the SD card on my R5C, waited for it to do all setup (FS resizing etc.), but finally wan0 still doesn't show up.

One more data point: DietPi v8.17 is on kernel 5.10.110 and finds both Ethernet adapters.

I just imaged a new mmc and booted successfully again. I can see from dmesg that we are using the exact same load: https://github.com/inindev/nanopi-r5/releases/download/v12-rc4/nanopi-r5c_bookworm-rc4.img.xz

This is strange enough that perhaps it could be a power sag. Here is the power supply I am using: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJ6BB44D

I got this one for the R5S which accepts USB-C PD 5V/9V/12V, however the schematic for the R5C shows USB-C 5V. This power supply delivers 3A @ 5V. Though I am also skeptical this is it because you can successfully boot the other distributions...

I have tried two laptop power supplies (65W Lenovo, 87W Apple): no difference.

So it seems my device works with kernel 5.10 but not 6.x. Your device (and apparently also those of others, looking at this OpenWrt forum thread) does work on 6.x.

Perhaps different hardware versions? Any ideas if/how we might be able to find out?

inindev commented 1 year ago

What could be different? Occam's razor causes me to order the possibilities I can think of in this way:

  1. Software
  2. Devices plugged into USB ports
  3. Device in M.2 Key E slot
  4. Insufficient power
  5. Undocumented HW revision

Is there anything in item 2 or item 3?

Before we conclude we are dealing with item 5, I do not think we can assume a laptop USB-C power supply automatically supplies a strong 5V source as the laptop probably negotiates 12v or 20v. I have some 2.0 and 2.5A USB power supplies. I will see if I can reproduce this behavior using these.

hello everyone.. i have a nanopi r5c with the raspberry pi power supply 5V 3A. and i tested mj2226/openwrt builds with kernel 6.1, 6.3 6.4. Both ports working fine(WAN and LAN Port). only i can not run is my M.2 ngff wireless card rtl8822ce.(it works only on the friendlywrt build with kernel 5.10).

inindev commented 1 year ago

To confirm, if you add the m.2 wireless card you then have trouble with the wan0 port?

xt5678 commented 1 year ago

no trouble. wan0 port works and the Lan port works also fine(both green LED are on). but the kernel 6.1,6,3,6,4 cant run the m.2 wireless card. In luci i can`t see the wireless option and the green LED WL on the nanopi is also off. And on Friendlywrt 5.1 works everything. I hope this information could help

xt5678 commented 1 year ago

and my usb ethernet rtl8152 dongle works also good with wan0 and Lan port on kernel 6.1(5V 3A)

joachimneu commented 1 year ago

What could be different? Occam's razor causes me to order the possibilities I can think of in this way:

1. Software

I am using exactly the rc4 image you released.

2. Devices plugged into USB ports

I booted without USB devices and plugged my USB keyboard in only once booted -- no difference.

3. Device in M.2 Key E slot

I have no device in that slot.

jclark commented 1 year ago

As another data point, I have an R5C I just got directly from FriendlyElec. I flashed the rc4 image to internal MMC and I see both ethernet ports.

I'm using the Raspberry Pi USB-C 5V 3A power supply.

I have an Mediatek MT7921K M.2 wifi card, which looks like it's working after I install firmware-misc-nonfree. (I haven't tested it properly yet, but the network interface is there and kernel messages show the mt7921e is loading firmware as it should.)

Also a big thanks to @inindev for this repo. I was getting really frustrated with the FriendlyElec images.

inindev commented 1 year ago

I tried several low-power 5V power supplies and had no issues booting. If there was an issue booting, it just would not boot at all.

There is a date code on my silk screen that says NanoPi R5C 2209 -- not sure if yours is different.

I see you are booting from external MMC, and I expect you have tried multiple different media. Another assumption is that the internal eMMC has no boot loader or you are holding down mask while powering on.

Outside of this, I also have to reach the conclusion that I think you already have: there must a component-level difference producing this outcome.

joachimneu commented 1 year ago

There is a date code on my silk screen that says NanoPi R5C 2209 -- not sure if yours is different.

I will check that and report back here.

I see you are booting from external MMC, and I expect you have tried multiple different media. Another assumption is that the internal eMMC has no boot loader or you are holding down mask while powering on.

I tried booting from internal/external, but it didn't make any difference.

Outside of this, I also have to reach the conclusion that I think you already have: there must a component-level difference producing this outcome.

I didn't buy my device directly from FriendlyElec, but on Amazon from this link https://www.amazon.com/Nanopi-R5C-WiFi-Router-32GB/dp/B0BNNNGTND/ . The device I bought was from "youyeetoo", which I thought was just a reseller, but maybe not? I have reached out to the support of both youyeetoo and FriendlyElec, but no response so far. Will report back here if I hear something.

Thank you so much for your help and patience!

I also sourced mine from Amazon, "youyeetoo": Ordered on March 21, 2023 (1 item) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BNQ6PMR8

Dang, so that's probably also not it. I ordered mine on April 29, 2023.

It seems like a long-shot, but I built a version that has a full r5c u-boot device tree (the other builds use the r5s device tree in u-boot). I am wondering if this may provide any additional initialization. It boots the same on my device but wondering if it makes any difference for you: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1u9fSenQrxM1XV2bynJAfibK7sksvepDz/view?usp=sharing

For an added data point: I’ve got an R5C running mj2226’s kernel 6.1 OpenWRT (currently in the 6.1.28 build) image with no issues with the ports (I was the one discussing it over on the OpenWRT forum.) I too bought it from youyeetoo on Amazon April 25, 2023.

@joachimneu, would you be able to try this image for me? I am hoping it may address your issue. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1u9fSenQrxM1XV2bynJAfibK7sksvepDz/view?usp=sharing

Sorry for the delay. I hope to give it a shot in the coming days!

I went ahead and assumed separate installs with no shared code would be the better approach anyway. The RC6 release images are built this way: https://github.com/inindev/nanopi-r5/releases/tag/v12-rc6

Test with the R5C install and let me know if you get any different results with wan0. Also, do you have a serial monitor on your R5C? I had a discussion about the reboot during the one-time setup that I want to be sure you are aware of -- it is covered in the boot from NVMe section, topic 1: boot from mmc

Closing due to age and lack of any other reports of this as an issue.
