Since this is the first substantive PR in a while I want to make it good. The comments seem to be in an inconsistent style, can we look at what this file looks like when rendered for documentation? @sbellem this would be a good time to revisit documentation system

Yes, will have a look. The documentation generation is in the process of being fixed as well via #388.
