In Safari 6 and 7 you can double click the empty space in the Tab bar to open a new tab, this does not work in Safari 8 (Yosemite Beta 2).

Is it within your power to add this or do we have to pester Apple some more?

Maybe. It's a bit annoying for me too. I'll see what I can do.
