Minor cleanup of explorer code #4197

While debugging an issue with the explorer I came up with these minor fixes which improve readability/maintainability/debugability.

As a final test I am going to run the explorer built from this branch on mainnet.

Will merge this after my explorer finishes syncing mainnet.

Well I suspect that I won't be able to sync mainnet. I am currently running in a VM with 8G of RAM on a machine with 32G of RAM. @disassembler tells me they run the explorer on a machine with 64G of RAM.
