Would it be possible to use a rechargeable 18650 battery instead? I'll guess a flat battery are easier to fint inside a controller than a rather large round one. But 18650 are much more common standard. Or why not one or two rechargable AA or AAA that would be charged through the USB?

AA or AAA batteries were considered, but it is not trivial to find standarized brackets for these, and it would also required a different larger back panel cover.

I would expect someone would make a AA battery mod eventually, but we will possibly go with the Lipo for the reference design.

Okey. To bad that the Pi Pico is micro-USB, let's hope Raspberry will release an updated usb-C version soon.
