Assess Persistent Identifier (PID) solutions

inseri is enabling researchers to publish the research output in a modern and interactive format. This research output is mainly a Publication that can be seen also as a Dataset or as a Software.
We would like to publish at least the static website - ideally with a dataset that would allow all other researchers to upload it in order to replicate the initial content. The permID should be linked to a data repository that can guarantee longevity (long-term availability) and sustainability (low cost) We are mainly interested in a combination of PID and data repository:

• well-established FAIR PID solutions (citable is very important) integrated with
• well-established data repository
• with programmatic access
• at a very low cost (ideally free)
• that can guarantee a very good longevity
• and ideally owned by one or several research institutions, and not a commercial one.

DaSCH is using ARKs - see here:

We provide archival resource keys (ARKs) as persistent identifiers for all of your digital data, enabling publications to precisely cite (a specific version of) individual objects in your dataset.

  • ARK and DOI are the key ones to use.

  • This is applied to the University of Toronto Scarborough’s Digital Scholarship Unit (DSU)
  • DOI is mentioned as an industry standard but not considered due to the fee. However via Zenodo can do this at no cost.
  • ARK is a better fit for DSU because it supports
  • early object creation, where metadata can be appended later (Andrei: Zenodo allows the users to edit the metadata of published records - search edit the metadata here)
  • being part of the URL (Andrei: This is possible also for DOI Encoding DOIs for use in URIs)

    We are the trusted platform and partner for open research data in the Humanities.

  it is domain specific while inseri is envisioned as transdisciplinary. Therefore DaSCH is not the first choice for inseri

  • it will be decided later together with the partners whether to contact DaSCH

  • Terms of Use v1.2 Zenodo can be used for free
  • one can use Zenodo Developer API to programmatically publish content.
  • the workflow has 3 main steps:
    1. create an empty upload that provides the bucket and the id.
    2. use the bucket to add files
    3. publish using the ID and add some metadata.
  • the content belongs to the researcher (inseri user) and the user should have an access token - easy to create here
  • Zenodo allows DOI versioning - search DOI versioning here

  • Following Freya_PID tool tables-def-v4.pdf we see that the DOI is a good Identifier for all these 3 use cases - see also upload_type from Zenodo Developer API.
