All of my "day 1" bugs using this.

Fixes #180 and half of #168

Also Fixes #178

In case this has been forgotten or overlooked: this branch solved my problems with private channels as well. Been using it for a few days. I can check over the next few days whether I seem to be missing messages from these private channels, but for now until this is merged I will run this fork. Thank you for this effort @zachdecook :)
