Random x lag spikes #23

Every so often X server mouse input (at least that's the one that i observed but it may also affect other peripherals) lags and seems to reset "pivot" position(idk. how to describe, it try it by yourself), this can be spotted by doing circles with mouse, the mouse just stops for couple ms. and the motion gets interrupted. I think it also lags drawing(the whole X lags?). That might not be a big issue in normal usage, but is very noticeable in 2D/3D games(mostly 2D as mouse isn't being "recentered" all the time). Also the issue seems to be somehow related to the refresh of the top panel(see attached gif). As i said its hard to spot but look what happens with mouse when volume indicator gets updated.

That is very odd. Try turning off the status (settings -> instantOS -> status) If the issue goes away then it's probably the status. Also do these lag spikes correlate with spikes in cpu usage?

I've done some tests using this script:

#!/bin/bash psrecord wmpid --interval 0.5 --plot stat.png --duration 120 & psrecord xorgpid --interval 0.5 --plot xorg.png --duration 120 &

Been monitoring instantwm and xorg. This are the results that i've got:

Status enabled:

WM: staton Xorg: xorg_staton

Status disabled:

WM: statoff Xorg: xorg_statoff

WM doesn't seem to spike that much regardless of statusbar presence, that said lag still occurs, but one can clearly see xorg stutter. I don't know if x lags because of wm or not, but there seem to be some overlaps? Maybe with smaller interval data would be more accurate. But some testing would be required.

Also tested on "clean" dwm build and it works fine there. Is there in instantwm/instantos some process/cronjob/service that runs in background that executes every like 10 seconds? Cause if so, we might be able find problem there.

The mouse cursor movement is completely separate from the WM, it works fine even if the WM is stuck in an infinite loop so the issue is likely somewhere else. The autostart script can be found here You can disable it with 

iconf -i noautostart 1

and re enable with

iconf -i noautostart 0

If that fixes the issue it's likely in there. It could also be a general xorg issue. What are your specs? (especially GPU)

With autostart disabled the issue disappears, so it seems that it is the cause of random lag spikes, also xorg doesn't spike anymore hovering around 2-4%. Here is my spec, don't mind weird cpu clock it just reads it wrongly for some reason.

I think i've found the problem, commenting out the piece of code inside this if statement seems to fix the lag spikes.

The line 314 or 317 to be exact, as if i do: watch xrandr | grep -c '[^s]connected' the lag spikes appear on every execution

That's interesting. Does xrandr cause lag for you in general? What GPU are you using?

What's also interesting is that this is one of the only occurances of grep -c in the entire OS. I mean if that is the issue I'm honestly considering busybox

Yes executing xrandr causes lag in general, does it run fine for you? My gpu is nvidia gtx 970 and i'm using nvidia driver.

I don't think that grep -c is a problem but that xrandr somehow lags x.

It does run fine for me, on a gtx 1060, including first person games

Just tested xrandr on a laptop with intel gma960 and it runs fine there. Gonna try it on fresh install on my pc tomorrow.

So i did some more testing. There might be something with xrandr that affects some group of devices, so i tested devices that i have, and the results are interesting.

PC(Nvidia GTX 970):

instantos live usb - xrandr lags instantos installed with nvidia drivers - xrandr lags ubuntu 20.04 live usb - xrandr lags

ThinkPad x240(Intel HD 4400):

instantos live usb - no xrandr lag arch linux with GNOME - xrandr lags

Acer Extensa(Intel GMA965) - basically a potato:

instantos installed - no xrandr lag

Dell Latitude D620(Intel GMA945) - also potato:

arch linux with dwm - no xrandr lag instantos live usb - no xrandr lag

Father's PC(Nvidia GTX 550ti):

instantos live usb - xrandr lags

Erazer x7849(Intel HD 530):

instantos live usb - xrandr lags

So it looks like xrandr lags on entirely different device with entirely different gpu type, so it might be a problem that affects more devices, but its hard to tell what exactly is going on.

Hm, looks like I will have to make automatic detection of new displays opt-in instead of opt-out. Unless you can find a way to detect new monitors without causing lag, that'd be awesome. I unfortunately do not have any device that has the issue so my abilities are limited here.

By the way I really appreciate your style of issues, clear description of the problem, lots of useful information and useful responses along with really nice extras like gifs and proper markdown. Keep up the good work :+1:

Hmm, assuming that this is a problem with xrandr one solution would be crating c program that does exactly that, then use it instead of xrandr to read number of displays. This way you could fix the issue without major changes in existing infrastructure. So the "screendetect" program could be used to read the number of displays. Well the more complicated solution would be integrating in into instantWM itself, but i don't think that this would be a viable option right now. Maybe there is another already existing program that could replace xrandr, but i couldn't find any.

Well the xrandr code is here if you would like to look at it, tried to look at that myself and i think that either this or that function is doing that. But i'm not sure.

Did you look at the xrandr issues, maybe it's already known and there's a workaround. If not it might be worth fixing it in upstream.

Before I resort to writing my own utility I think it might be worth checking out xdpyinfo, it should be possible to detect the number of displays using that. Does that one also cause lag for you? And does the xrandr lag also result in a longer execution time for you? (time xrandr)

It might be worth trying a few other different techniques, nice-level, subshell, forking etc.

Also this lagging might be somewhat driver related, so on my thinkpad x240 running Arch with GNOME(same one mentioned before) i installed xf86-video-intel (i didn't have that since i run wayland session there), and after doing so xrandr stopped lagging, so whichever driver gnome package group pulled for X had issues with xrandr.

Also i don't know if that's normal but running xrandr on my desktop shows that there is six displayport outputs, where my gpu only has three of them, and two defferent dvi's and i only have one of this type of port, so that's weird, but might be unrelated.

I wasn't able to find similar issues in xrandr repo, but i've found something similar here under the nouveau driver issues.

Worth a try I guess but it's just polling xorg and some part of that query is making xorg lag, and no matter what the shell does, the same information goes to and from xorg

@OwczarekGit That is very interesting. Can I also have the time for xdpyinfo? What I have in mind is just running both on startup and checking which one takes longer to execute so it uses the other one.

Just found out that running xrandr --current works without any lag, so maybe that can be an universal solution?, as currently only nvidia driver users have a fix but if you use nouveau the lag is also present as it doesn't have nvidia-xconfig.
