When looking at markdown-element.js, it doesn't seem to depend on @polymer/polymer I might be wrong, of course.

Maybe, it is there from previous versions

Could you remove that dependency, to keep it as just a lit element?

You're probably right. I've been super busy so I haven't gotten around to a lot of maintenance.
