From: Terri (paraphrased)

Just a quick note to let you know that we're gearing up for GSoC 2022. It's going to be an interesting year! Google's made a few big changes:

  1. GSoC is open to anyone over 18, not just students!
  2. Projects can now be 175 hours (part-time like last year) or 350hrs (full time like previous years)

As in previous years, PSF is very happy to help projects submit applications directly to Google and they're willing to be the backup plan (suborg) in case Google doesn't select a project as an organization. Ideas page review seems to help a lot, and having some well-described easy ideas seems to increase your changes as a new GSoC org. Being a top-level GSoC org rather than a sub-org will give you more control over slot allocation and you'll get to keep the mentor stipends instead of them going into the general PSF grants pool.

Terri will be sending another email with dates and deadlines and the signup link once she does some updates to the template and test them, but just wanted to make sure we all knew we're getting started and remind us that this year is once again a little bit different than the last!

Hey all,

You can now apply to be a Python sub-org for GSoC 2022 here: https://blogs.python-gsoc.org/en/suborg/application/new/

Sub-org applications are due Feb 19th.

(We've tried to streamline the form a bit, please let us know if you encounter any problems!)

As usual, you're encouraged to submit your own top-level-gsoc org applications directly to Google. If you'd prefer not to appear on our ideas page until after you know if you've been accepted or not, your deadline is March 10th. (a few days after Google's decisions go out.)

And if you know of any new groups not previously involved in GSoC, please have them email gsoc-admins@python.org to express interest!

Terri

We could have done it earlier in feb. Missed out on early traffic. Even 2-3 days is too late. We had been waiting on buildtree descision.
