UPT Display Passthrough - HDR Broken #211

Open Krobar opened 2 years ago

Krobar commented 2 years ago

I have a VM using UPT passthrough of an HDMI 2.0 output using a Paradetech PS175 LSPCON, the CPU is an I3-8300S. 4K resolutions work fine but although HDR support is correctly detected in Windows 10 it fails to signal the display (Display detects BT2020 but does not detect HDR and the colours look washed out). The Intel driver reports the connection as Displayport.

I cannot seem to get legacy mode to work. Is HDR signalling not possible with UPT display passthrough?

Do you have any tutorials for UPT? I used UPT mode to pass through the J4125, but the iGPU can be recognized under Windows, but there is no HDMI output. Here is my qemu configuration:

My similar UPT config to yours would work if using legacy bios but not for UEFI.

For UEFI I had to use legacy mode, 440FX and compile a specific UEFI firmware containing the Intel GOP and VBT roms from my motherboard. More details on that here: https://www.reddit.com/r/VFIO/comments/uoqu1b/uefi_intel_gvtd_display_output_hdr_kethenedk2/

Legacy mode was easier but no HDR support or hotplug.

The UEFI solution offers hotplug, HDR support and displays the bios/windows install screens. There are some big caveats with this solution though; older Windows 10 1809 works for HDR but cannot be rebooted. Current Windows 10 21H1 has no HDR support but reboot works fine. I think the issue is later Windows builds need the Intel Management engine to enable HDR.
