Add a new pedagogical example of using application_efficiency.
Ensure Sphinx runs the new example, even though the filename doesn't start with "plot_".
Add pandas to intersphinx alongside matplotlib, to enable direct links to relevant pandas documentation.

Pre-commit is failing because of the formatting of the Sphinx configuration file. That's already fixed by #47.
