this update uses different api once pin version > 3.13

Any plan to merge it? Just noticed, it doesn't seem to work with pin > 3.20 (depending on pin version I either get compile error or missing symbol when dynamic linking)

Just to make it explicit - let me take care of merging this one (assigned the PR to myself), let's just merge the tagged releases description first.
