As stated by the man page, the tool should add the found devices to the ACL or did I miss something?

Did you manually authorize the devices previously? Is there a separate udev rule you have that is authorizing them? Or are you running in SL0?

I manually authorized the devices only on windows. For linux the machine was always in SL0 until 4.13 came up (SL2 since then). I am using the AUR package which I am the maintainer of and that package uses the bundled udev rules.

Did you hotplug since authorizing on windows? I don't know for sure if the authorization is cached in the TBT controller. So you have separate udev rules for the device? Or you mean you just have the ones that come with this stack?

Authorizing on windows is a couple of month ago. Since then I definitely have hotplugged the dock. I only have the udev rules provided in this project (unmodified).

  1. The man page carefully mentions "all currently connected Thunderbolt devices that aren't authorized yet". Already authorized devices aren't added, as the user may intentionally selected to remove them from ACL.
  2. As you noticed, tbtadm claims that the devices are Already authorized.
  3. What is the output of cat /sys/bus/thunderbolt/devices/domain0/security?
  4. What is the output of journalctl -t tbtacl?

  1. I never authorized them in linux. 100%.
  2. Yes, I saw that but since I never authorized them I did not really trust that output and I wonder how to deauthorize them?

Looks like an issue with the udev rules installed on your machine.

  1. The updated rules invoke tbtacl only if DEVTYPE == "thunderbolt_device", so it shouldn't have been invoked for domain (where it fails for no UUID).
  2. The rules use add and change actions, while we can see here authorize.

Could you please make sure the only udev rules you have for thunderbolt are coming from this project?

I'm not sure what to think. The fact is that some lines in the above log can't become from these rules.

Some more directions to investigate:

  1. The output of tbtadm topology. (Edit: sorry, tbtadm, not tbtacl)
  2. The actual info from sysfs about device authorization status (something like for i in /sys/bus/thunderbolt/devices/*/authorized; do echo $i:; cat $i; echo; done)

The logs are from yesterday. Shouldn't the authorization be reset when the dock and the computer is turned off and on again? If I understand the helper script correctly there should be keys in /var/lib/thunderbolt/acl to reauthenticate the devices after a restart, right?

I notice this system is in SL2. Reading through https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/f4dd029ee0b92b77769a1ac6dce03e829e74763e/Documentation/admin-guide/thunderbolt.rst it makes it sound like the challenge with a key is actually optional after the initial connection. The challenge can be performed by writing the key and by sending to 2 to authorized. What happens if the challenge isn't performed? The tunnels are just made by default?

Sure it is, but sysfs info shows the devices are authorized now, so you still have something that authorizes them, and it isn't tbtacl according the logs above.

Let's try the following:

  1. Disconnect the dock.
  2. Wait more than 10 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the dock and see dmesg output (better to have it already followed with dmesg --follow and some Enters to easily see what is the new output).

For the keys (answering @superm1 questions too): ACL is user-space concept (as the kernel can't save a persistent list for next reboot). Thus, the usage of a key is also the responsibility of the user-space to use. The point of the key is for making sure the device we found in ACL is really the one that the user approved when it was added to ACL. If the user prefer "connect once" behavior (not adding to ACL), there is no need to send a key at all.

This results with the following driver logic on SL2: If key is empty and authorized == 1, authorize the device (this is the user-space asking for "connect once"). If key isn't empty and authorized == 1, send the key to the device and authorize it (this is the user-space adding the device to ACL, so a new key is sent). If key isn't empty and authorized == 2, send a challenge (based on this key) to the device and authorize it only if the device succeeded the challenge (this is the user-space asking to verify the device is the one added previously to ACL). If key is empty and authorized == 2, this is an error (2 is only for the secure-connect flow).

Thus, if there is something in user-space that automatically writes 1 to authorized, the device will be authorized anyway, no matter if this is SL1 or SL2.

Makes sense?

This might have something todo with my bios. "Dell Type-C Dock Configuration" -> "Always Allow Dell Docks" was enabled and I disabled it. The BIOS setup options are confusing IMO. "Dell Type-C Dock Configuration" -> "Always Allow Dell Docks" Doesn't change authorization in OS IIRC, it just allows USB and DP to work on Dell docks at BIOS.

OK, all those boot-related things and the "always allow Dell docks" indeed look relevant. I assume that after disabling them we'll see the normal behavior of devices not approved automatically. Let's give it a try.

The down side will be that on preboot environment you wouldn't be able to use the dock, but if you really have preboot support and the device is auto approved anyway, you don't need the ACL, so no reason to care :)

The tbtacl logs you provided (above, not the latest) are still bothering me, with this unexpected authorize command, but I'm not sure how to help debugging it besides trying a clean environment :(

Ok, I disabled everything except of "Enable Thunderbolt Technology Support". After a reboot the topology showed the cable and the doc as not authorized. Yay!

But a "tbtadm approve-all" lead to (this was the second try, first also timed out)

So the dock stopped working there and I think we have two new questions here:

  1. Why are the BIOS settings carried over to the OS?
  2. Why does the dock time out and then disappears entirely? (turning on the mentioned BIOS options again without power off lead to a completely working system)

tbtadm acl output shows that the device got disconnected while in the authorization process, which is why the key wasn't added to the ACL entry (it's added there only after we can be sure it was sent to the device; otherwise, no point in saving it).

The question is why.

dmesg output from the connection process?

About the BIOS setting, if the device is connected on boot (before the OS is up) and thus approved by BIOS, it's kept connected when the OS up.

And just in case, could you please make sure you have the latest BIOS update installed? It should be easy to done as Dell platforms are well supported in fwupd, as much as I understand :)

I think it might be easier to figure out where the problem is if you remove/disable all userspace components, like tbtacl/tbtadm. Also make sure you don't have any additional udev rules (I think you did that already).

Then set the security level from BIOS to "user" (SL1).

Then boot to the mainline v4.13 kernel. Make sure you don't have any thunderbolt devices connected at this point.

Once the system has been booted up, connect the dock.

The expected outcome is that no devices are authorized.

  2. So the usage as a docking station where all usb devices are connected to and SL2 are mutually exclusive? At least I cannot use BIOS and Grub without authenticating :/ @superm1 Aren't you working for Dell? Is this behavior intentional?
  3. BIOS is up to date (though Precisions are not yet supported by fwupd)

@westeri I think we already figured out that the problem are the bios settings, didn't we?

@westeri I just booted in SL1 without userspace tools and disabled BIOS options. Dock did not authorize. It's the same behavior with SL2, userspace tools installed and disabled BIOS options and clean ACL.

Right now? I am back in SL2 with BIOS options enabled to be able to work with the system. But I can try anything you want :)

Yes, please set to SL1, and do what I asked in the above comment. Then check that both devices are not authorized.

I did that a couple of minutes ago. I removed the bios options and set it to SL1, powered of the system, powered it on again and /sys showed me that nothing thunderbolt related was authorized.

OK, and now if you authorize the devices manually (echo 1 > DEVICE/authorized), they appear in lspci output and no errors in dmesg?

I could authorize the cable, but I got a timeout authorizing the dock. There were no errors in dmesg for the dock :/

You have the dock connected during boot which breaks everything. There is a fix for this going for v4.14-rc1 but in the meantime you need to boot without devices connected and only when the system is booted up, you can connect a device.

Can you retry so that you don't have devices connected at boot?

Definitely not. If device was authorized during preboot, it must be kept this way for the OS. Possible use case of this feature is for loading the OS from and hard-drive connected behind TBT. Of course it can't work if it gets disconnected as soon as the OS starts.

Regarding backporting, yes we plan to get the fix backported to v4.13 once we know it does not cause other regressions during v4.14 cycle. The commits in question are:
