This might be related to an older u-boot as hinted to in this forum post: https://www.olimex.com/forum/index.php?topic=8620.0
Although I did see this happen once, it seems to be much less frequent with the updated u-boot, so I will close this issue.
Some times there is an issue with reading the necessary files from u-boot. This causes the boot process to stop after "Starting kernel..." is written to the console. This seems to be an issue that can be solved in u-boot.
