Incorporate changes from the RC branch #201

This will bring the 2.2.x branch up to the point that we can add the final adjustments before dropping the v2.2.1 release tag.

In addition to incorporating the current RC branch and some outstanding PRs, if continues the effort to increase compatibility with Python3.

It is the version of Redeem that has been included in the test images that I have posted.

Since the testing was expanded in Travis, we have to "fix" the broken tests that were hanging around.

In this case, the test was obviously just a stub. Further, it will never work on Travis because it requires hardware.

I fixed it in my tree back in December.
