Outreachy - An open source programme #13

I had come across Outreachy this year. It is one of the most famous open source initiative, much like Google summer of code but with limited participation groups. Only women and traditionally underrepresented communities are allowed to participate in Outreachy.

A lot of GSoC organisations like Mozilla and Libre Health are a part of Outreacy communities. I was wondering maybe InterMine could apply as a community on Outreachy as well. Just an idea.

I love this idea! It's a bit trickier than GSoC because we need to find funding of $6,500 before we can apply, but I totally think outreachy is brilliant. It's also nice because it does southern hemisphere summer, too - like it's GSoC all year round 😍

@yochannah hello... I am begginer , just thougth for outreachy 2018-2019 ,how it is trickier can you explain me pls if possible

@vidushi04 well, from InterMine (or any open source organisation)'s point of view, all the organisation has to do for GSoC is be prepared to mentor students while they're completing their projects. Google actually provides the funds that are paid to the students while they're working. With Outreachy, open source organisations have to find a source of funds in order to join the program. Outreachy uses those funds to pay the student.

Finding the extra money can be tricky sometimes :) I am making some enquiries but I can't promise we'll adopt this program. If I think we will be, though, I'll definitely update the issue!
