I am the originator of the query of Honza Fiala regarding a new version of the IOF XML onr month ago. My name is Libor Forst and my main activities are in the trail orienteering: IOF Trail-o SEA, WTOC 2023 director and an author of many SW tools for trail-o including the newly approved punching system ToePunch.
I have two minor suggestions that IMHO do not change anything in the rest of disciplines but helps a lot in the trail-o:
In the trail-o, most races have two-level results - the primary criteria is number of POINTS, and the secondary is TIME in seconds. In fact, this is not something special for trail-o, even in foot-o there are so-called scorelauf races where the same system of criteria is used. However, the IOF XML which is a very good unified format for data exchange, does not cover this form of results. Better told: there is an item SCORE, in the result object, but according to the description, is does not mean points reached in the race but a long-time ranking score assigned to the racer according to his result in the race only after the race. Strange thing is that the IOF Eventor accepts the SCORE field and works with it like with POINTS properly despite a misuse according to the description. So the question is - do you still plan to use the SCORE as something calculated AFTER the race? Then, please, add a new item POINTS as a part of the result object, with a description that it is a number of points that a competitor gets DURING the competition. On the other hand - if you don't plan to use SCORE for the original purpose and it is legal to use it for points achieved during the race, please, change the description of it to be sure that this is a legal way how to use it. We can only hope that it will not cause problems if someone uses it still according to the original idea.
The Relay race in trail-o has a specific feature that the total result of a team is not necessarily the sum of times of individual legs. :-) There is a total time limit for the whole team and if the course time is longer, then the team gets a time penalty. In the ideal world, we could have items like PENALTY and so on but for now, it is absolutely sufficient for us, if you add an optional field (TOTAL-)TIME to the Team result object. In other disciplines it can be omitted and used as till now, or it can be calculated and added anyway. Presentation softwares will do the same - if the TOTAL-TIME is present, it is used, if not, it is calculated from leg-times.
Thanx for considering these two minor changes - it would help trail-o to follow the same instructions and processes for (not only) major event results presentation.
