One can argue 'mainstream' with protocols, but a number of them seem to be in the realm of IRIS:

MQTT for IOT edge communication (Raspberry Pi and the like)
gRPC for very efficient and fast communication in MicroServices infrastructure (instead of TCP/HTTP)
