Amplify Volume

Would it be possible to amplify the volume of a mediafile?

some movies i have have a very low volumelevel and i have to raise my tvs
volume nearly to it's max. 

vlc has a volume bar which can be used to gain a higher volume then every
other mediaplayer i know of. it seems like it's amplifying the volume
somehow. would it be possible to achieve ss like that with mplayer ce?
